Guys, this isn’t going to be a long post. But suffice to say, I think I may have gone full New Mexico.

That is, I definitely traveled to Taos this weekend to go to a couple of ridiculous hippie desert dance parties and stay in an Earthship. (This was just as awesome as it sounds.)

I posted some photos of the interior of the structure on Instagram and got a lot of wowed feedback, and so — compounded with the fact that I did not feel like writing a 3,500-word article about RV air conditioners at the time — I decided to make this quick little video walkthrough.

Earthships as a concept are pretty special. The idea is to create sustainable off-grid living solutions that harvest their own water and electric power, and don’t require auxiliary heating or cooling. My stay came with a free entry to the Earthship Visitor Center, and I’d highly recommend anyone in the area to stop in. Everyone is helpful and friendly and has thoroughly drunk the Kool-Aid, which I understand, because even after just two nights, I had, too.

That said, there are apparently some endemic design issues — which, of course, is going to be the case no matter what we innovate. Earthships are still a great inspiration and jumping-off point for finding radically sustainable ways of living, and I’m super glad I got to experience one.

(Also, the asking price was $175K, if anyone’s interested.)
