At least it’s already more than halfway over.
This month has been super eventful, both in my personal life and in the world at large, and in a lot of not-so-good ways.
David Bowie. Then, Alan Rickman. I almost cried when I sat down at work and opened my Feedly and saw that news.
Plus, last week I witnessed this drug bust directly across the street from me — as in, I’m totally to the right of those photo frames watching everything go down. I was upstairs on my laptop working from home when I heard “POLICE WITH A WARRANT, POLICE WITH A WARRANT” over a loudspeaker. I looked down and saw the armored car, machine guns. My first thought was that they must have been shooting a movie.
I’m not sure if that’s sad news or not, but I watched people dragged out in handcuffs, lives changed. And it’s all just everyday crap. The world keeps going and this little town, even my little building, has seen so much of life I’ll never get to know about.
Then, Saturday night, I got into a nasty scrape with a vegetable peeler. I’ll spare you the details and visuals, but let’s just say fingernails are no match for steel blades and my pinkie’s gonna be under wraps for a good, long while. Then yesterday, I woke up sick as fuck.
So here we are.
Not to say it’s all been bad news this month: I had another poem accepted for publication, which I’ll be sure to post when it goes live.
I also found out I had 60,000 miles to use on American Airlines, just as serious, anxious wanderlust began to set in. Of course, a free ticket to almost anywhere is a dizzying decision to make, so I hemmed and hawed for a long time — but settled on Barcelona after a process that was equal parts research and chance.
Also, and most immediately, I have hot homemade beef broth simmering in the crock pot so I can make real ramen for myself this afternoon.
Anyway, all this is why there was no wine post last week. I’ll try to have one this week, assuming I can actually taste things by then. Here’s looking forward to the rest of the year being better — maybe we’re just getting all the bullshit out of the way early.
How’s your new year so far?
