Hi, I’m Jamie Cattanach. I’m a writer, reader, editor and experience junkie.
After a stint of grey skies and concentrated drinking disguised as networking, I dropped out of a creative writing MA program in rural Ohio and moved back to my native Florida to take a position as a staff writer for The Penny Hoarder. There, I wrote about creative ways to make and save money, from core personal finance topics like starting an emergency fund and using credit cards responsibly to travel hacking and finding the cheapest grocery store — or, you know, eating roadkill instead. (Hey, it’s free!)
In a blatant attempt to legitimize my vice, I pursued, and now hold, a Level-3 certification through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. I love to find premium-quality wines at surprisingly low price points, and sometimes I write here about my favorite picks.
Nowadays, I’m a full-time freelancer, and my work can be found at Ms. Magazine, Roads & Kingdoms, BUST, The Write Life and elswhere. My essays and poems have been published at Nashville Review, Word Riot, DMQ Review, Hinchas de Poesia and Sweet: A Literary Confection. I also help tame the slush pile for the original fiction column at The Rumpus. You can see my full portfolio of digitally published work here.
My favorite topics to write about are wine, food, travel and personal finance. In short, I’m invested in finding and sharing the best ways to live well. My other interests are diverse, but include literature and linguistics, nutrition and fitness, dark chocolate and Randall Munroe.
I’d love to hear from (and work with!) you, so feel free to reach out and say hello.
